Geotrading’s Executive Director presents an award to the Rector of UMG

Mrs Emilia Ilieva, Executive Director of Geotrading AD, part of GEOTECHMIN GROUP, presented an award to Prof. PhD Ivaylo Koprev, Rector of the University of Mining and Geology “St. Ivan Rilski” (UMG) at a special ceremony recognising the best universities in Bulgaria. The rating system had been created at the request of the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science. It compares the performance of 51 accredited universities offering education within 52 professional strands based on 47 indicators. The event was organised by 24 Chasa Daily (the 24 Hours).

‘As a representative of the mining industry, I would like to congratulate the University of Mining and Geology for winning this year’s award in the Mineral Exploration, Mining and Processing professional strand. I would like to emphasise that a large number of managers in the mining companies in Bulgaria are UMG graduates. In 2023, the university marked its 70th anniversary and throughout its history it has been successfully partnering with business. A Career Day was jointly organised by GEOTECHMIN GROUP and other mining companies and was attended by more than 100 students showing keen interest in career paths in the mining sector,’ said Mrs Ilieva when presenting the award. ‘For this academic year, GEOTECHMIN GROUP has provided 15 scholarships to UMG students and over the past few years the total number of awarded scholarships has exceeded 40,’ she added.

‘I am so grateful for the mutual cooperation between UMG and the mining industry in the person of Prof. DSc. Eng. Tzolo Voutov, President of Geotechmin OOD. As you probably know, there are a few Bulgarian companies included in the World’s Top 100 Mining Companies. Hardly anyone knows that 98% of the mining engineers in the aforesaid companies are Bulgarians. Thank you for trusting us!’ said Prof. Koprev.

The Publisher of 24 Chasa Daily Mrs Venelina Gocheva emphasised that it has been increasingly important for business to have well-educated staff – its most valuable asset. ‘Every year we motivate the rectors to seek to provide such specialties that are modern, attractive and inspire young Bulgarians to continue their studies in Bulgarian universities. I wish you will find such professions that give the shortest track to young people to live a happy and fulfilling life,’ said Mrs Gocheva.

The Academic Oscars 2023 ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Academician Nikolai Denkov, Minister of Education and Science Prof. Galin Tzokov, Minister of Innovation and Growth Milena Stoycheva, Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, rectors and representatives of the academic community.
