Geotechmin shares key sustainability practices at ESG Insights Forum in Sofia

At the exclusive event ESG Insights on Social Value & Circular Economy in Bulgaria, organised by SeeNext with the support of the European Investment Bank, Mr Dominic Hamers, Executive Director of Geotechmin OOD, highlighted how Ellatzite-Med AD, part of GEOTECHMIN GROUP, is advancing circular economy best practices in the mining sector.

During the panel discussion “From Extraction to Regeneration – Rethinking Raw Materials in a Circular Economy”, he emphasized that copper is an infinitely recyclable resource with a key role in sustainable development. ‘Copper can be recycled endlessly. Currently, 80% of the world’s copper supply comes from ore mining, while only 20% is recovered from scrap materials. However, with continued access to primary resources, the importance of secondary copper is expected to grow. By 2050, it is estimated that recycled copper could amount to 30% of global supply – marking a significant shift toward a circular economy in the mining sector,’ said Mr Hamers.

Mr Hamers outlined the best practices implemented at Ellatzite-Med, including:

  • Using part of the extracted rock mass to produce certified building materials – a strong example of converting mining by-products into valuable resources.
  • Implementing a closed water cycle in copper ore beneficiation – through recovery and reuse of industrial process waters.
  • Reclamation of lands disturbed by mining operations – a key stage of responsible natural resource management in the mining sector.

‘The mining industry is continually seeking opportunities to reduce waste, reuse resources, and conduct mining operations in a more sustainable and efficient manner,’ he concluded.
