The first sod of project “Completion and Putting into Operation of the Tramway Connecting Iskar Station and Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd” was turned on 1 July 2009.

The project is commissioned by Sofia Municipality to joint venture “Transremontstroy” with leader Roads and Equipment EAD and partner SKGT Transremontstroy AD. According to the contract with Sofia Municipality, the joint venture has to construct a 2000 m of tram line, tram crossings and platforms, as well as other infrastructural facilities. The construction works are planed to be finalized by the end of 2009.

The construction and installation works on this tram route started in the period 1985 – 1986 with the laying of a tram line with approximate length of 8000 m, with a 1435 m wide track-gauge and with a classical rails structure. In the years part of the line was dismantled thus disconnecting it from the rest of Sofia’s tram network. Around the abandoned tram line irregular waste dumps and ill-kept areas covered with wildings were formed.
