Ellatzite-Med AD

Ellatzite-Med AD is a private joint-stock company dealing with extraction and processing of copper and gold-containing ores. It is the largest company in the GEOTECHMIN group.

The company is a leader in Bulgarian mining industry and an active member of such organizations as the Bulgarian Chamber of Mining and Geology and the Scientific and Technical Union of Mining, Geology and Metallurgy. Ellatzite-Med represents the modern business in Bulgaria, has an active civil position and a responsible approach towards the environment and the social issues of the regions where it is located.

The company has 1,834 workers and employees. Ellatzite-Med AD is among the major taxpayers and one of the biggest investors and concessioners in Bulgaria.

The company is located some 70 km east of Sofia and comprises of two main production units: an open-pit mine in Etropole and a flotation plant near the village of Mirkovo. “Ellatzite” is the biggest open-pit copper mine in Bulgaria and it is the largest local producer of copper and gold concentrate. The mine has been in operation since 1983 and is scheduled to be effectively exploited until 2022.

The total quantity of the mining mass extracted in 2007 was 55 million tons which set a record for Bulgaria and the Balkans. 42 thousand tons of copper, 1.6 tons of gold and 5.5 tons of silver were produced out of the 13 million tons of mined ore. The achieved extraction rate was 92%. The copper concentrate is traded on the home and foreign markets. At present the production of molybdenum concentrate is being established.

The company operates its own explosives plant where emulsion and packaged explosives are produced under American license.

Ellatzite-Med AD maintains traditionally good relations with leading Bulgarian and international companies: Cumerio Med AD (Pirdop), Lukoil, Hitachi, Shell, Belaz – Sofia, Z&M Private Co., Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, Krupp Fördertechnik, Kirov, Austin International, Cobalt Limited, Reedrill, Atlas Copco, and many others.

Up-to-date and highly efficient mining equipment operates at mining complex “Ellatzite”. Large investments are made not only in new production lines, technology, equipment and environmental protection, but also in constant improvement of the qualifications of workers and employees – the most valuable asset of the company.
